Asphalt Asters

single-use plastic bags, steel, thread, PVC, cement.
Dimensions variable

2025

"Asphalt Asters" metamorphoses community-sourced, single-use plastic bags into a field of asters, a keystone species for pollination. Anchored in cement and rising from asphalt, the work juxtaposes the ephemeral with the enduring, highlighting the interplay between human consumption and nature's resilience.

Each sculpted bloom, larger than life, serves as a testament to potentiality—of materials repurposed and city spaces reimagined as sites of biodiversity. Elevating what is often perceived as mundane to a grand scale, "Asphalt Asters" transforms overlooked beauty into a palpable, immersive experience.

This installation reconceptualizes human engagement with city ecosystems in a collective stride towards sustainability and coexistence.

The artwork was developed and installed in partnership with New York City's Department of Transportation and installed in Flatiron NYC.
